TOXIC FRIENDS

Job’s friends were not the type of “friends” he needed. The moment they opened their mouths, they lost their ministry to Job. In fact, they were far beyond neutral, they were toxic. They accused and attacked his integrity. Think about Job experiencing such soul agony, only to have more misery piled on him by his companions.

Toxic people are puffed up and critical. They don’t help you love God or people. You never feel encouraged after being with these noxious individuals. They seem skilled at saying the wrong things at the wrong time. Further, they seldom give an unqualified compliment. Blinded by arrogance, they feel free to unload their dislikes and criticisms without reservation. Rest assured the lethal accusations they level at you have been mulled over and discussed with other people before verbalized in your presence.

The healthiest thing you can do is to remove yourself from negative, voluntary relationships. Avoid these peace-stealers when possible. Don’t give an audience to career critics. Your wellbeing demands that you withdraw from the verbal poison that comes from contaminated souls.

You need real friends, not miserable comforters like Job’s friends. Treasure the people who care for, and treasure you. They know how and when you need encouragement. They possess grace and wisdom in ministering help in times of need. True friends always help, and never harm.
