“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled all the house where they were sitting” (Acts 2:2).
“In the springtime of 1855, an Irish Presbyterian minister addressed the young men of his congregation in the village of Connor, Co. Antrim, N. Ireland, with the words, ‘Do something more for God.’
Four young men took up the challenge and became busy for God. Two years later they began meeting together to pray in an old schoolhouse. They were impressed by George Müller’s prayer and faith and some news of the Fulton Street prayer meetings in New York under the leadership of Jeremiah Calvin Lamphier. So they desired and prayed for a time of revival blessing.
Their prayers were specific, powerful, and effectual. God always rewards such dedicated, believing prayer. One year later they began to see drops of Heaven’s grace that ultimately resulted in a mighty revival in Northern Ireland when 100,000 souls were gloriously saved. Heaven had heard and floods of divine blessing swept the land. Souls were not only saved but the whole of society was changed, socially, morally, and spiritually.
The Puritan, John Trapp, once said, ‘God never denied that soul anything that went as far as Heaven to ask it.’ These young men found that to be true.
One of the young men who met to pray described public reaction to their prayers for revival, ‘Many of the people ridiculed our praying for an outpouring of the Spirit saying that He had already been poured out on the day of Pentecost. But we replied that the Lord knew what we wanted, and we kept right on praying until the power came.’ Their prayers shook Northern Ireland and, eventually, the British Isles.” —Tom Shaw
